I was pretty happy with this action shot. Although it would be better if I could get the defender on the left out of it and if the guy he was jumping over was on the opposing team. Oh well! I still liked it!

The girl in the second photo is a major super fan for Trine. I'm not surprised she's so crazy about sports...it's in her blood. She is Coach Hep's niece and that whole family loves sports.

My friends have started a heavy metal band named Herald the Autumn. I sat in during one of their practices a few weeks back and plan to take some publicity photos tonight. I haven't done band photos in awhile so I hope it goes well! The only downer, is that I had to take the photos now instead of when the leaves begin to change. It would have been so appropriate with 'Autumn' in the name.

WOW! It has been a really crazy summer! Sorry for the lack of photos on this blog. Cutbacks had to be made and most of my social networking activities were at the top of the list. I promise to start posting more!

So here is some big news:

1) I put in my notice at The Herald Republican for October 2nd. Really didn't want to quit this job, but it was necessary due to...

2) I got married last month!!! Yaaaaayyyy! I plan on putting up photos as soon as I get them. Our photographers were a husband and wife team from Fort Wayne, Happinest Photography. THEY ARE AMAZING! We were both incredibly happy with their preview photos.

3) I'm moving back to Indianapolis!

Here is a photo that I took of a swan sitting on her nest while watching her mate in a marsh area. My editor said that every time he drives by, the swan is sitting there in the same spot. I was happy that they didn't come hissing at me to attack, which they are known for doing.

My First Helicopter Ride!

I was so excited to get a helicopter ride last week with the Steuben County Economic Development Corporation. In a nice trade for my services, I got the helicopter ride and a chance to photograph any aerial photos in the area that I wanted. So exciting! Most of the photos are like the first one here because they were looking for photos of intersections and areas that they are thinking of developing. It's amazing how fake and odd everything looks when you are looking down on it. I had trouble identifying major roads and businesses. My friend Roxanne heard the helicopter over her house and came out to wave at me while I took a picture, but I wasn't able to see her in the photos. Wouldn't that be neat!?

Tincaps Opening Night

The Fort Wayne Tincaps made their minor league debut last week in their new location at Parkview Field. The park was amazing and I almost forgot how much I missed a good baseball game! It was also neat to see how many people in the area were excited for the former Fort Wayne Wizards to reveal their new name and park (newly named after Johnny Appleseed, a native of Fort Wayne, and his popluar fashion statement of wearing a metal saucepan on his head for a hat). I'm really hoping that I get another chance to photograph a game this season.

Turkey Buzzards!

These are some of the most gnarly birds that I've ever seen. A local town has become a popular roosting spot for turkey buzzards, or turkey vultures. They really do look like the perfect (but ugly) combination of a turkey and a vulture. They remind me of the old Warner Bros. cartoons with the creepy, skulky vulture that was always stalking a character.

Tea Party Protest

If anybody noticed on Facebook recently, I was very upset about being verbally assaulted for being "liberal media" while on an assignment. I didn't know the guy and he didn't know what he was talking about. I've noticed that people tend to judge me as being liberal, just because I'm carrying a camera and a notebook. Objectivity is one of the aspects of my job that I take the most seriously and I sadly had to get in this guy's face to leave me alone. He just kept following me around and yelling at me...so I had some choice words for him. I'm not sure how well I handled this, but I got a little caught up in the moment. I regret not turning on the video camera that was in my hand to capture what he was saying.

Stained-Glass Windows

I've spent some time recently on a LIFE front for our Sunday dailies on stained-glass windows in the area. I visited around 8 different churches, including one former Jewish temple (rare for this area) and a military school's cathedral. The fourth photo of two biblical wise men is special because the taller man is black. The window was made in the early 1900s by Tiffany & Co. when it was rare to depict anyone that wasn't white in church windows. I had no idea how beautiful these windows were until I stopped to take a closer look. They have an amazing amount of detail and the colors are so vibrant. Here are a couple of my selects.

Sad Times

A town about 45 minutes away from my office is struggling with the recent economic downfall. Many of the local store fronts are empty, including our office in that town. The photos were a struggle for me because I wanted to have an impact photo of a building...one that isn't too boring. The town is also 1/3 Latino, so many of the store fronts, occupied and empty, were Latino themed.

An Amish family has just opened a bed and breakfast and recently had their first guests. Chicago natives stayed at the home and had a 13 year-old boy that was having a blast out in the country. He spent his spring break feeding goats, husking corn and doing other chores with the children!

This was taken at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo in the Indiana Family Farm area. This was, and still is, my favorite part of the zoo.

There was a fishing boat right in the middle of the glistening water. But by the time I got out my camera, they had raced off.

More From the Buffalo Preserve

Here are some more photos from the buffalo preserve in Fremont. I turned them to black and white, but I'm thinking that they would have looked better in color. I still think that the photo I posted the other day is my favorite.

This is the owner looking at his favorite buffalo, Bosco. He is also the oldest of the animals.

The owner was sad when he mentioned that some of the animals are to be slaughtered. Each year they slaughter as many as are born to keep the numbers solid. This is a photo of him talking to the animals, saying "sorry," as he drives by. Very sad. You can tell that he truly loves these animals.

This is another photo of Bosco as he walks up to the preserve's owner.

This buffalo was literally rolling on his back in the side of this hill. He said that he never gets to see them do this.

I liked seeing the contrast of the bull and calf in this photo.

The owner feeding red apples to Bosco. The buffalo don't have upper jaws and can't really hurt you during feeding. You do get very slobbery though. He did mention that even though they can appear gentle, you should always exercise caution because they can jump 5-feet high and can get up to 35 mph in 3 steps.

One of the last photos that I took as we were driving away.

This is the alter that holds the bones of female buffalo. People have had their ashes laid here and often leave medicine bags. It is a very sacred part of the preserve.

A flat-bed full of buffalo bones is seen in front of the gazebo.

Buffalo meat tastes similar to beef and can be cooked in about any way. My boss goes out there and purchases meat and my Dad is a big fan. I have yet to try it.

The preserve has a BEAUTIFUL bed and breakfast that looks out onto the summer fields. It's very Native-American and cozy. There are buffalo skins on the beds and neat little antiques everywhere. I would love to stay out there sometime.

I have driven by it on so many occasions and I'm finally getting out there to take photos. Tomorrow I will post some more that I have taken.

My Attempt at a Portrait

Portraits really aren't my strong point.

This is a photo of a local gymnast that is going to the State Championships, and her mom/coach. The mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and I'm sure that the story will be amazing. I've known these two ladies for a long time and they are a great team together. But I'm not sure how strong my portrait is. What do you think? I think it's one of my more creative ones, but with such a moving story, I'm not sure if I did I good job.

My boss told me to go down this road and see if I could get a photo of the flooding, but I wasn't expecting to see a Jeep swept off the road by a newly made river from this week's rain. New Laptops

A local elementary school just received a grant to purchase laptops for the second-grade class. Each student gets to take theirs home with them, as long as their parents consent to it. The computers were really tiny and full of parental controls, but still very nice for the kids. I couldn't help but laugh after I took the photo because these two boys are really just playing games. They seem so concerned about it!

I really need to explain this photo. The other weekend there was a grand opening/unveiling of a new performing arts center at the local university. They had artist renditions of what it will look like in the future while the drama club performed a skit for the audience in front of them. I thought this photo was cool because this girl looks like she is standing in the future performing arts center and not in its current state. I didn't notice it until I got back to the office!

The Horse Whisperer

So this guy doesn't really whisper to horses. He actually travels around the country teaching wild mustang owners how to control them and teach them commands. It was really neat! But I wish that it hadn't been raining. We had to cut our time short and I got really muddy. The horse had rolled all over in the mud before his photo shoot, so he's a little dirty. I think the photos turned out nice. Personally, I liked how the fourth photo turned out, but my coworkers didn't really care for it. What do you think?

FINALLY!

I'm so excited, I could just burst!!!!

Today I found out that I have received three awards with Indiana AP for 2008! I have never won an award for anything, besides "photo of the week" for the IDS...which really doesn't count for much outside of the newsroom. When I submitted these photos, I wasn't very excited because I didn't think they could stand up against some of the other stuff that I have seen around the state. I still don't. The first one has a person blocking the main subject and the second has a pole sticking out of the center of the photo. Every year when the time comes to submit your best work, I always get bummed out for never winning.

Nature Center at Pokagon State Park

A local group called ABC in Action helps young children begin the learning process, before they are of age to go to school, by hosting family learning events in the area. Today they went to the Nature Center at Pokagon State Park, which is right down the street from where I live. The room is terrible for photos so I thought they would look better in black and white. My lenses don't respond well with low-light situations because they are SO old. That's why the look a little soft...also I was shooting at a low shutter speed. But still, I thought you might think they were interesting. :)

This kid didn't like the garden snake all that much.

Suicide Attempt at the Jail

In December I posted some photos called Arson. Today, the guy responsible for the arson of the young girl in the car tried to slit his throat in jail. It just so happens that our reporter was in there getting some reports when she heard what was happening. She then sent me over right away and we were able to get a shot. We don't know what his condition is or how it happened, but we were both excited about the spot news opportunity of it all. However, when taking the photo, I felt really weird...like I shouldn't have been there. I usually don't feel that when shooting spot news.

I especially like the photo that I posted earlier, it's my favorite right now. He came to the city in Northern Indiana because it has one of the largest unemployment rates in the country and was largely hit by the decrease of sales in the RV business.

Here is the March cover of our family magazine. It is a monthly magazine that I take the cover photos for and sometimes for the inside stories. Most of our inside art is stock. It's a pretty interesting free magazine that really focuses on quality family fun. This photo was taken at the Fort Wayne Botanical Conservatory. Unfortunately there weren't that many spring flowers (I mean that there were none) because it is January. But this little girl was one of the best that I've worked with! Sometimes I have trouble getting the child to smile and look right into the camera. She knew exactly what she was there to do and she is only 3-years-old! I think the photo works well for the cover, but it wasn't my favorite from the shoot. The flash made her look kind of washed out.

Here is a video I made prior to the election. It was so amazing to hear her speak and I had no idea how great of a public speaker she was. The video turned out pretty nice, considering that I was fighting other photographers for elbow room on the stairs. My photos from the event are also in the video. Let me know what you think! I just figured out how to post my videos to the blog without it being a hassle. Video has become a very big part of my job and I try and shoot both photo and video for every sporting event, except for swimming (I struggle just getting photos done). Also, I'm supposed to get video from any other news assignment that is worthy.

Stroh Bank Robbery

Today was rather interesting. On my way to the Humane Society I heard on the radio that the school buses were being re-routed to the school because of a bank robbery in Stroh. I called my boss and told him what was going on and head out there an hour later, thinking that the robbery happened awhile ago and that there wouldn't be anything to shoot. When I get there, I couldn't find any police cars at the bank but they were all down the street. Apparently the guy locked himself in some guy's house and they were waiting for the SWAT team to get there. So I'm freezing my toes off, waiting for about an hour for them to go in and what do they find? Nobody's home. Oh geez. I think this first photo turned out pretty nice. I was shooting at 1600 ISO and 1/30 per second, thinking that there is no way that these are going to turn out. Most were blurry and grainy but I think this came out okay. Let me know what you think about it and if it works. I didn't want to use my flash and I was way down the street shooting (for safety reasons :)). The first photo is of the SWAT team going into the house and the second photo is of the lady that lives next door to the scene. Her daughter and son-in-law came to get her when they heard what was happening. So much drama for a small town!

Polar Bear Plunge...

We have had sub-zero temps all week up here and seven people jumped into the water today...after they had to chip away at the ice.

Crazy.

The first photo got picked up on AP and I've heard that the South Bend Tribune, Fort Wayne Journal Gazette and a Seattle, WA paper picked it up, but I'm not sure if anyone else did.

Basketball Conference Semi-finals

Today is a very busy day for me! I'm shooting four basketball games (thank you snow for the rescheduled games all in one day) and I took pictures of another polar bear plunge. Here is a shot from this morning's Fremont vs. Angola game. These two teams are highly competitive against each other and are huge rivals. The image is a little soft but the action was nice.

Science Experiment

Today I decided to post a video, instead of a daily photo. While I was sitting at breakfast with some friends, they mentioned that they heard about an experiment with boiling water and snow. It has been absolutely freezing here (-12 when I left work last night) and we thought that this would be fun for our Web site. Somebody also told my editor about this so when I came in they were all ready to have some fun!

Here is another shot that I got on my way to work this morning. It was taken just a half-mile down the road from the turkey photo from yesterday. (I should really take a different route to work.) It was such a pretty morning, I should have taken more. It seemed to be the calm AFTER the storm.

They scattered as soon as they saw me so I only got a couple of shots off. Probably because they thought I was holding a gun. They're kind of cool to see, especially around Thanksgiving.

This was one of my more simple assignments but I've heard about people being killed by ice sickles and I can see why. This building had some crazy daggers clinging to the roof. I thought this shot was kind of nice.

I am going to try my hardest to get one good photo every day I work and post it to the blog. Lately, I've noticed that my photos have been getting more drab as the weather gets worse. This is my push to stop being lazy and get out and do something. Wish me luck!

Tractor Show

Sunday was the Angola FFA Tractor Toy Show. They had kind of a poor showing because of the bad weather but it was still interesting to see. It is basically a trade show for toy tractor collectors. I know absolutely nothing about tractors so I had to ask a lot of questions!

Schoolhouse Rocks

Here is a shot from the outside of the Crooked Lake School House on Orland Road. As the students graduated they got to carve/write their initials on the bricks of the building. The one-room school house was used in the 1800s-early 1900s. It was really neat to see because I have driven by this church on many occasions and have never seen this. This was the only shot that I really liked though, even after I got access to the inside.

Karly's BIG Mistake

Today I went to the Polar Bear Plunge at Hamilton Lake and boy did I mess up. About fifty to one hundred people jumped into the frigid water, providing me with possibly one of the most perfect photo opportunities. However, all of my batteries died right before it started. So I had to change them in two cameras. Then they neglected to have a countdown and the next thing I know they are in the water and immediately trying to get out. So I pull up my camera and start shooting.....about 20 pictures in I realized that my exposure was way off! Therefore I screwed up a great photo op. This picture would have been great...

but this is what I got...

I'm an idiot.

First Annual Shipshewana Ice Sculpture Festival

Last Saturday was the first annual Shipshewana Ice Festival. The town has a large Amish population and is filled with cute little shops. The festival would have been a lot better if it didn't start pouring down rain and the temperature was a bit lower than 50 degrees! Not exactly the best conditions for an outdoor ice carving competition!

Now this is a really sad story. I received a call one morning to stop by this trailer park because there was a car arson in the middle of the night. This is what the place looked like when I got there. It turns out that there was a teenage girl and her mother in the car, which was set on fire by the mother's boyfriend...at least that's what we think happened. Last I knew the girl was in pretty bad shape and the guy is going to be in jail for quite some time.

Christmas Concert at Ryan Park

The functional skills class at Ryan Park Elementary School had one of the most adorable Christmas concerts that I have ever seen. They had a little boy dressed as John Mellencamp, the cast of the Wizard of Oz and of course....Shirley Temple!

Habitat for Humanity Home Dedication

The local Habitat for Humanity home was finished recently and they had a dedication for the family and guests. The home was completely decorated by The Vault with really nice decor! It was quite a surprise for the home's owner, Joanna Carpenter.

Icy Roads Create Havoc on the Highway

This holiday brought a lot of terrible driving conditions with it. This car from Virginia was driving north on I-69 when it rolled several times. The driver and two dogs were okay but this girl was ejected from the vehicle. She was in stable condition and talking when I left.

Hawk in the Courtyard

Outside my window there was a hawk eating a white pigeon.....really gross. By the time I got out there he was done with his meal but he did let me get really close to him for this shot.

Kathie Lee Gifford Visits Kendallville

Kathie Lee Gifford co-wrote a high school musical called "Keypin it Real" and it debuted at East Noble High School. Here are my two favorite shots of her. Following the show I interviewed her at a dinner reception in this beautiful mansion for a video on the Web site. The interview went really well except I had to change batteries half-way through because I shot so much. On the Monday following the show, Kathie Lee held up a copy of the newspaper with my picture on it while doing her segment on the Today Show. I always knew I'd get on the show some day but I thought it would be in the crowd on the Plaza! It's too bad that it was just a boring cast photo that she held up...

Toboggan Slide Time-Trials

The refrigerated toboggan slide at Pokagon State Park held their festive time-trials the weekend after Thanksgiving. I love the expressions on the kids in the first photo. It would have been nice if the sun poked out for a little bit. It was so cold and all of my batteries kept dying.

My First Swim Meet of the Year

So my first swim meet didn't go very well. The lighting was horrid and with my flash on I couldn't stop the action. I do like the expression in the first picture and it looks pretty clear.

Windmill Museum Celebrates with Holiday Lights

The Mid-America Windmill Museum decorated the grounds with a variety of Christmas scenes and we used some of the photos for a holiday LIFE front. This shot was really neat because I slowed the shutter down to about 2 seconds and it caught the characters in both positions. The lights show the two tetter-tottering up and down.

Hendry Park Celebrates Turkey Day

I covered a couple of Thanksgiving Day celebrations at the local schools but this one caught my editor's eye. It got picked up on AP due to the recent outbreaks of parent fights with teachers and other parents over whether or not the Pilgrim and Indian attire is appropriate for public schools.

LLAMAS!

I think I'm ready to quit my job and open up a llama farm. Today we went to a farm in Metz, Ind. for a preview story for their open house. We had so much fun and I learned a lot about this animal that I had never seen. And no, they didn't spit on us. These animals are really similar to a house pet. When we got out of the car they all came up to the fence and just stared at us. I think I got some nice shots so let me know what you think!

I really like the sky in this shot....but it got a little washed out.

Such a noble animal....

"You said WHAT?!"

This cat came right into the pen and let the llamas nuzzle him and smell him. The owner said that they have to smell everyone and I had some problems keeping them off of me and my camera...as you can tell from the above photo. He was coming right for my lens.

"Are you looking at us?"

The llama fur can spun just like wool to create a thread that is actually softer than lamb. It also doesn't have any lanolin in it, so you don't feel itchy.
